{"id":134,"date":"2008-09-19T20:37:46","date_gmt":"2008-09-20T01:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/?p=134"},"modified":"2008-09-19T20:38:29","modified_gmt":"2008-09-20T01:38:29","slug":"aspireone-fixing-mplayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/2008\/aspireone-fixing-mplayer\/","title":{"rendered":"AspireOne fixing MPlayer.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The stock <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mplayerhq.hu\/\">MPlayer<\/a> that is included with the AspireOne didn&#8217;t see to have support for very many codecs.<a href=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mplayer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-135\" title=\"mplayer\" src=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mplayer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a> It certainly didn&#8217;t handle the quicktime videos (.mov) that our Kodak point and shoot created, nor did it manage to handle a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xvid.org\/\">xvid<\/a> encoded video I had converted from DVD using <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.exit1.org\/dvdrip\/\">DVDRip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many users of the AspireOne simply install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.videolan.org\/vlc\/\">VLC Media Player<\/a>, there is a pretty long <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspireoneuser.com\/forum\/viewtopic.php?f=5&amp;t=167\">how to thread<\/a> on doing this in the aspireoneuser.com forum.\u00a0 There are also plenty of comparisons out there on the web about vlc vs. mplayer &#8211; I&#8217;m not going to go there.\u00a0 The reason that I didn&#8217;t immediately go the VLC route was that the AspireOne shipped with MPlayer, and it seems more reasonable to &#8216;fix&#8217; it than simply throw it out and start fresh.\u00a0 (of course, my end\u00a0 solution was basically toss the stock MPlayer and install a new more useful one).<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t take credit for figuring out how to do this.\u00a0 Some web searching turned up the answer posted with nice detail on <a href=\"http:\/\/aspireonelinux.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/get-mplayer-to-play-your-favorite-video.html\">another blog<\/a>.\u00a0 I would recommend that you review the comments to the posting before trying to upgrade your Mplayer.\u00a0 I had some problems, all of which were addressed in the comments (and for the most part have been rolled back into the main post).\u00a0 The only problem I had that was not covered in the comments, and is likely due to some of my previous hacking was missing dependencies, which was cleared up by issuing a &#8220;sudo yum update fedora-release&#8221; before trying the install.\u00a0 Hats off to <a href=\"http:\/\/aspireonelinux.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/get-mplayer-to-play-your-favorite-video.html\">Mike Silva<\/a> for posting a great how-to.<\/p>\n<p>This now makes it possible to use the AspireOne to watch movies converted from our <a href=\"http:\/\/mattrowntree.com\/mmdb\">DVD collection<\/a>, handy for when we&#8217;re travelling.\u00a0 The updated Mplayer can also handle quicktime movies created by our camera, giving us another good reason to drag it along on trips.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The stock MPlayer that is included with the AspireOne didn&#8217;t see to have support for very many codecs.
