{"id":299,"date":"2009-03-17T22:39:12","date_gmt":"2009-03-18T03:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/?p=299"},"modified":"2009-03-17T22:40:04","modified_gmt":"2009-03-18T03:40:04","slug":"chromium-on-ubuntu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/2009\/chromium-on-ubuntu\/","title":{"rendered":"Chromium on Ubuntu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/2008\/burned-by-chrome\/\">previously mentioned that I&#8217;ve toyed with Chrome<\/a> a bit, both on Windows and I&#8217;ve tried out the various ways to make it run under Linux.\u00a0 The Windows experience isn&#8217;t bad, but the Linux story was pretty unusable\/uninteresting.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=09\/03\/17\/2345216&amp;from=rss\">slashdot post<\/a> went by that mentioned the new 2.0 version of Chrome and indicated that a Linux build was available, but also mentioned how usable it was.\u00a0 I had to try it out.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re interested here is what you need to do.<\/p>\n<p>Start at the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~chromium-daily\/+archive\/ppa\">PPA (personal package archive) for Ubuntu Chromium<\/a>.\u00a0 It will instruct you to add a line to your \/etc\/apt\/sources.list file.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;m running Intrepid Ibex I added the following:<\/p>\n<p><code>deb http:\/\/ppa.launchpad.net\/chromium-daily\/ppa\/ubuntu intrepid main<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Then you need to add the key if you want to avoid the warnings about an untrusted source.\u00a0 Execute this command line:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 5a9bf3bb4e5e17b5<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Then update your apt-cache:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-get update<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Followed by installing chromium itself:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-get install chromium-browser<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Its still very early.  Tabs don&#8217;t currently work, https seems broken in some way, no flash support, crashes, etc.  On the bright side &#8211; it is native Linux and now that you&#8217;ve hooked yourself up to the PPA you should get regular refreshes as part of the system update process.\u00a0 There is lots that is working &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/reader\">Google Reader<\/a> for example, and my favorite Chrome feature the omnibar seems to be working well too.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, Happy St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-300\" title=\"ubuntuchromium\" src=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/ubuntuchromium.png\" alt=\"ubuntuchromium\" width=\"493\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve previously mentioned that I&#8217;ve toyed with Chrome a bit, both on Windows and I&#8217;ve tried out the various ways to make it run under Linux.\u00a0 The Windows experience isn&#8217;t bad, but the Linux story was pretty unusable\/uninteresting.
