{"id":77,"date":"2008-06-13T21:14:11","date_gmt":"2008-06-14T02:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/?p=77"},"modified":"2008-06-13T21:14:11","modified_gmt":"2008-06-14T02:14:11","slug":"turbo-slug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/2008\/turbo-slug\/","title":{"rendered":"Turbo Slug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well I finally got around to de-underclocking my NSLU2 (aka Slug).\u00a0 It took about 10 minutes start to finish, so I really have no excuse for why it took me this long to get around to it.<\/p>\n<p>The NSLU2 Linux wiki has very detailed directions on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nslu2-linux.org\/wiki\/HowTo\/OpenTheCase\">cracking the case open<\/a>.\u00a0 Go slowly to avoid snapping off the plastic tabs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/100_5111.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78\" title=\"100_5111\" src=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/100_5111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now comes the fun part, modifying the hardware.\u00a0 It turns out that for whatever reason the NSLU2 was underclocked, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NSLU2\">wikipedia article<\/a> discusses this and other interesting facts about this device.\u00a0 While this is a discontinued device, they are readily available from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B0001FSCZO\">amazon<\/a> still.\u00a0 All we need to do to allow the Slug to run at its native 266MHz is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nslu2-linux.org\/wiki\/HowTo\/OverClockTheSlug\">remove a resistor<\/a>.\u00a0 I used a pair of tweezers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/100_5114.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-79\" title=\"100_5114\" src=\"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/100_5114.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you look closely, you&#8217;ll see the tiny resistor in the center of the palm of my hand.\u00a0 I later dropped it onto the floor and lost sight of it.<\/p>\n<p>Putting the unit back together isn&#8217;t documented as well on the wiki &#8211; I found that it was easier to insert the circuit board into the light grey &#8220;front&#8221; and then snap the back on.\u00a0 Again, go slowly to avoid breaking any tabs off.<\/p>\n<p>Having <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nslu2-linux.org\/wiki\/Debian\/HomePage\">installed a version of Debian<\/a> on it the other day, I was able to ssh into my new &#8220;turbo slug&#8221; and cat \/proc\/cpuinfo which showed me BogoMIPS: 266.24.\u00a0 Success!\u00a0 It does seem to be more responsive.\u00a0 I&#8217;m tempted to try tinkering with doing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nslu2-linux.org\/wiki\/HowTo\/FattenYourSlug\">memory upgrade<\/a>, but that may be beyond my soldering skill level.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well I finally got around to de-underclocking my NSLU2 (aka Slug).\u00a0 It took about 10 minutes start to finish, so I really have no excuse for why it took me this long to get around to it.
