{"id":95,"date":"2008-07-07T21:45:44","date_gmt":"2008-07-08T02:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/?p=95"},"modified":"2008-07-07T21:51:13","modified_gmt":"2008-07-08T02:51:13","slug":"reverse-dns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lowtek.ca\/roo\/2008\/reverse-dns\/","title":{"rendered":"Reverse DNS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My previous ISP supported static IPs, but I never bothered to chase after them to provide a reverse DNS mapping for my domain.\u00a0 Now that I&#8217;m using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncf.ca\/\">NCF<\/a> DSL, the admins there are able to accommodate my request for a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reverse_DNS_lookup\">reverse DNS<\/a> mapping.<\/p>\n<p>Having a proper <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PTR_record#PTR\">PTR record<\/a> isn&#8217;t critical.\u00a0 For years, even prior to having a static IP, I was hosting a webserver using <a href=\"http:\/\/afraid.org\/\">dynamic DNS<\/a>.\u00a0 Once I had a static IP, I was able to reliably host my own email &#8211; however there were a few friends who&#8217;s ISPs were pretty aggressive about tagging email from my domain as spam.\u00a0 While my static IP wasn&#8217;t on any <a href=\"http:\/\/mxtoolbox.com\/blacklists.aspx\">blacklists<\/a>, it didn&#8217;t pass the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forward_Confirmed_reverse_DNS\">Forward Confirmed Reverse DNS<\/a> test (FCrDNS).<\/p>\n<p>As of this weekend, lowtek.ca will pass a <a href=\"http:\/\/ipadmin.junkemailfilter.com\/rdns.php\">FCrDNS test<\/a> &#8211; which in theory will help email flow more smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Most of my friends have opted for much simpler configurations.\u00a0 Using either a hosting company to provide their domain services, or in at least one case using the free version of <a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/software\/ask-lifehacker\/what-does-google-apps-for-your-domain-actually-do-330318.php\">Google Apps For Your Domain<\/a> to handle email.\u00a0 Certainly much simpler &#8211; but from my point of view, not nearly as much fun.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My previous ISP supported static IPs, but I never bothered to chase after them to provide a reverse DNS mapping for my domain.\u00a0 Now that I&#8217;m using NCF DSL, the admins there are able to accommodate my request for a reverse DNS mapping.
