Back up and running..

As my theater is starting to finally take shape, I’ve been making a bigger effort to sell my CRT projector.

I got some help to bring the Ampro out of storage, to setup for a demo to a prospective buyer. Its literally been months since I had a chance to play with the projector and I had forgotten how much fun I have playing with them.

A very quick setup (less than 30mins) got me a surprisingly good image on my white (primer) wall. Spiderman 2 looked really, really good. I’ll be sad to see the CRT go, especially at the price I’m asking — but I still believe this it the right thing to do for me now, I just won’t have time to play with the CRT as much as I’d want to. I’m going to need a plug & play type device that I can basically ignore completely.

There is still something completely captivating about standing a few inches away from the screen and seeing such a great image. Hopefully whoever buys this will get as much enjoyment out of it as I have.

Going to the light side..

This may be a sign of insanity. I’m going to sell my Ampro and buy a digital projector. I’m certain that part of this is because I’ve not had my CRT setup and running since June — since I clearly remember going and seeing various digital projectors and then going home and thinking what an increadible image I had at home.

However, as flawed as my reasoning is. I think I’ve convinced myself that there are digital projectors that give an ‘acceptable’ image for the effort.

There are other projects I want to spend time on, and I suspect that my home theater will start to take a back seat. I won’t have the time to invest in tweaking the CRT, and while I’m crazy enough now to let it go.. its probably the right thing for me to do.

Of course, someone else will probably be laughing all the way to the bank since I plan to sell it for half what I paid for it 🙂 and the Quadscan processor will have to go too — which will probably fetch a mere fraction of what I paid for it.

Well, there you go.. confession over.

Slow progress

Well, seems it is always that way with any big project. My basement construction is taking forever it seems, but I’m learning loads and doing almost all of the work myself.

Sadly, I had to take down my temporary theater setup to finish the construction. So for the next little while I’m theater-less.

I’m sure things will pick up here once I actually have things setup again.

Finally reconverged..

I find you have to reconverge your CRT projector about once a season after you’ve got it properly setup.

Tonight we watched the 2nd Charlies Angels (to let it warm up properly) and then I ran through a full mechanical setup (and convergence). Picture is much better, and it only took me 15mins or so.

Amazing how sharp I can get red, green is ‘ok’ and blue.. well, you can never really get blue sharp. One day I’ll have to break down and do the astig & flare — it is supposed to really help.
