Status of List

June 29th, 2009

PalmOS is effectively a legacy system now.  I realize that the recently released PalmPre will have some form of compatibility layer, but I suspect there will be native Pre applications which have the same functionality (or at least if the BEST applications are emulated 68k apps, then the platform is in trouble).

The iPhone has really filled the gadget gap for most of the Treo users now (or they’ve got to a Blackberry).  I’ve very recently picked up an iPod Touch – and I may one day write some software for it, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I see that HanDBase is available on the iPhone – and it should be possible to convert your List format databases for use with it. If someone knows of a better database program for the iPhone, add a comment here and I’ll be happy to investigate and post my opinion.

From this point on – don’t expect another version of List for PalmOS.  There may be a future version for some other platform, but I don’t see that happening for literally years.  So it may be a long wait.

I will continue to host this site – and answer questions as best I can.

Having tough time converting my List database files (.pdb) to anything else. I am a Mac user and would love to save my List data sets (years of work) when I give in to iPhone lust. Tried PorDiBle with no luck. I am ready to use HanDBase for iPhone but I can’t get the conversion going!

To convert List databases, you need to use a conversion tool that knows about the List format.

On a Mac, your choices are going to be limited to one of the Perl scripts that can be found via the download page of this site.

For converting List databases to HanDBase or another file format like csv, xml or excel, one could also use my DBConvert utility. Since it is a Java program you could run it on nearly every operating system. The program can be downloaded for free at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/fnprog2pda/

List is great. Not 100% compatible with my Treo 90 though – it gets stuck in caps lock mode whenever you create a new list item. Any chance you’d be willing to open source list, since you are no longer interested in updating it?

Alan, the source is available – send me email listdb@lowtek.ca.

I use List for years. Doesn’t work well on my Treo650/680 (localization issue ?) but still.
I spent hours to find a another soft more stable with the same functionnality without any success. List is free, easy and useful. KEEP IT ALIVE !

I developed scads of databases with List (in Graffiti yet), but I haven’t found a single Mac app that can touch if for simplicity, elegance and power. Please let’s find a way to bring back List and make real progress.
